Potty Training, Days 3-4

Day three of potty training proved to me that this system is teaching Laney how to control her urine flow. On the first day, we went through 20 panties in two hours, the first two hours of training. She now knows how to hold it for a while. So, that's the good news of day three.

The bad news of day three is that since she held her pee-pee for so long, I only had three or four opportunities to train. Day three seemed to zip by us in a flash. By the time her 2.5-3 hour nap was about to roll around, she had only pee-peed once that morning. She still hadn't gone number two.

Another thing I noticed was that she WAS communicating with me on day two, but on day three, since she didn't go a lot, the four times she did go, she didn't tell me. I'm now noticing signs though, signs that tell me she has to go: holding onto something, running quickly into another room, prancing, getting up on her tip toes or alternating bending her each foot forward enough to balance on the front of her foot..etc..

On day three she didn't pee during her nap either. So, that was still amazing.

Here's what I can't do: I can't command her to go potty before nap and nighttime. I can encourage it and I can take her to the potty (this is the only time I actually tell her that she needs to go before nap and nighttime), but I cannot MAKE her go, like I want to do, knowing she sleeps long naps and all night long. Last night was the first night in three days that she peed in her sleep. I woke at 2:30 to go check on her and she was wet. I heard her stirring earlier, and since I was so dazed and confused, and since her stirring was short lived, we both, Laney and I, fell back to sleep so quickly. At 2;30 I woke up and remembered that she had stirred earlier. The author of the article suggests that we keep our ears tuned to their stirring so we can go take them, and the past two nights I did just that and it worked.

Are we fully potty-trained now that we are at the end of the three days? No. Not fully. A lot of the "training" has been done. She's aware of the sensation, knows how to say the words now, knows where to go, but will I continue the training this upcoming week? You better believe it. Now we are living out the "training" that she has had.

Day Four: Boy, so far day four has been tough. She didn't want to go pee-pee at all during the morning hours, as I reminded her and waited on her to tell me that she needed to go. Through obvious ways, she was also needing to go poo around 11:30. She was TERRIFIED to go poo. I'd rush her to the potty, she'd sit there a minute. I'd say, "we're all done, so let's pull up your panties" since I saw no action. She'd immediately go to her room, hold onto the crib slats and tell me "no", something she used to do when she would poo in her diapers. She was communicating with me that she needed her space. Unfortunately, there's no personal space for her until we get through this training time. She was SOBBING on the toilet, because she was scared to push on the toilet. So, I brought her down and waited for her to walk to her crib, which was immediately, and then took her right back to the crib. Finally, she went while holding onto the crib, but I caught her right away, sat her down and put the "poo" in the potty for her to see. She thought she went in the potty that way. I cheered and sang, although she was still a bit frightened. I'm curious to see how this Poo training will go this week. She's a daily poo-er. We don't let her drink juice and in fact, we NEVER buy it. But during our potty training, in order for me to have more opportunities for her to pee-pee, I needed to give her more fluids. In order for her to drink more fluids, I had to make it yummy. So, this week is the exception. And we all know what apple juice does to us. Yep. I had to give it to her this morning knowing she hadn't pooed in days. So, I KNOW more is yet to come, and QUICKLY. Ha! Once she gets all of this training nailed down, we'll be waving bye-bye to the juice, until I get a juicer.

So, we've covered LOTS of ground, but we're not 100% there yet. The hardest is behind us and the easiest ahead of us. I just hope it goes quickly so we can get back to the normal routines of our days.
