Queen Laney

Hugh, Laney and I went to have dinner with some friends of ours who graduated from North Georgia a few years before we did. They just happen to live in the area, so we made the effort to get together for dinner. Their three children were a hoot! The whole family had us giggling all evening long. It's good for us to be around people who have more than one child, because they are a few steps ahead of us and in a few years, we'll be there too. Laney loved the kids and they loved Laney. If you look closely, the boys have marker all over their faces, and all three of them also wrote all over their bellies. Laney wasn't with them when they were doing that. Here they are below surrounding Laney. She was sitting in a little booster seat and they were pushing her around the house on their hardwood floors chanting "Queen Laney!"

As you can see in the picture below, Laney was holding on for dear life!

Here's little Miss Sweet Pea quietly sitting in her reading corner with just her diaper on, flipping through her numbers book.

Speaking of diapers, I just had to take a picture of her cute diaper butt. Precious!

This is her fitted cloth diaper that looks EXACTLY like a disposable and even has Velcro on it for closure and elastic around the legs. It's made of flannel and it needs a cover. She doesn't have one on here.

As much as I love cloth diapering, I do have my moments where I am yelling at the poopie diaper I am spraying off because it's plain awful, all the while my nose scrunched up from the smell and site. I had one of those moments this morning. (How come all of my "stories" have to do with Laney and her bodily functions, as my friend Rachel so wonderfully commented about?) I was NOT a happy camper while spraying off the worst diaper known to MANKIND this morning. It was actually her second doozie of the morning. Mercy alive, it was B-A-D and everywhere. I was a total wuss about it too, but hey......it was GROSS. All over the cloth diaper, on the outside of the cloth diaper, on the cover....and I was using a prefold(the flat, old-fashioed diaper) and it was in every fold and crease of cotton. If you were a fly on the wall, you would have heard me yelling at the poo in the bathroom. What a wimp I was! Ha! I mention this because I don't want to paint this lovely cloth diapering picture for you readers. I do have moments when I'm thinking "oh, disposables would be so much easier," but all in all, those are just fleeting moments, and I'm quite pleased with cloth. I was interested in cloth in the beginning for the sheer fact that is was soo inexpensive, and we need that. But now, my heart has changed toward loving the fact that I'm helping keep the landfills of millions and millions of plastic, nasty, sick, ecoli diapers down from filling our land. I use disposables on trips to town, out of town trips and at night, so I do use them, but the overall majority of the time, we're in cloth. I'm quite used to the fact that we're a cloth diapering family, but I wonder sometimes how people "see" us when they find out that we're in cloth. I think, "Well, they think we aren't able to afford disposables." And ya know, they are right. They probably think "we're total "green" freaks." Hmm..not quite....but I am a "bohemian" at heart in a lot of things. As the days pass, I am loving more things that are green, but I'm not a purist in it. I've learned through this how to not judge "a book by its cover." I mean, I've always known that, but it really hits home now. So....is anyone out there willing to try cloth when they have a baby????

oh we have those moments too! something I've started doing with really nasty poo diapers is letting them soak in the toilet. I just lay it dirty side down in the water and let the junk soak off. I just close the lid and and shut the bathroom door so Will doesn't get in there. It helps that I rinse diapers in his bathroom that we only really use for his baths. Not only does it save water (versus spending like five minutes spraying) it saves my sanity! I usually go back to it at the next diaper change, pick up a dry corner and most of the poo is gone. Sometimes it needs another spray or two, but much easier than spraying originally!!

Maybe this is gross - but to me its worked great! Oh and what kind of fitted is Laney wearing in that picture? Is it a pocket fitted? It looks like there is an insert in it...

That is EXACTLY what I expect to go on during an evening at the Gibbs home!! Covered in markers, sliding around on the hardwoods, lots of laughs and fun....

I am so glad you use cloth diapers - for the environmental reasons, financially, and health wise - no bad chemicals on Laney's skin! I enjoy using cloth though I use disposables at night and a lot of other times, too. But Darrell isn't too happy when he finds a diaper soaking in the toilet!

Laney is really cute in her diapers!

Joni,
I didn't know you were using cloth on Jasper! Yay! I'm so happy to hear that. We used disposables at night as well, even though they leak. It's all good though. Thanks for commenting.

So many of my friends are having babies, and I really want them to give cloth a try. It's soooo much better on the planet - and cute little bums. ;) Cloth diapering is actually relaxing to me; isn't that weird? I also want to know what diaper Laney is wearing... Hollie, as good as you are at sewing, you ought to try making the diapers.

Love you!!

Hi Hollie...I am Tara's (Hudgins) sister in law and I have to say I enjoy reading your blogs about cloth diapering and all the other things you have introduced me too. No one in my family has ever cloth diapered or breast fed so it's interesting to hear other opinions and experiencies on it. We have not yet had kids but when the time comes I plan to try cloth diapering one to do finances, enviromental reasons and also how much better it is for babies. Just wanted to share.

Hollie,
You don't know me either but I am friends of Stephen, Jenny, and Liz. I found your blog via Stephen and Jenny's blog and love it! We are expecting our first child in September and will be cloth diapering. I was grossed out about it at first but as I have read your blog, I have discovered it is SO doable and budget-friendly. We just moved to Wake Forest, so if you know of any good places to go scout out for cloth diapers, let me know. You can visit our blog at travisandstephanie.wordpress.com Thanks for the info and keep the stories coming!!
