Progress on the Garden Boxes

These little plants might not look big to you, but you didn't see them when we planted them just a few weeks ago. I get so excited every time I go out to water them. They were little seedlings when planted and now they are taking off with the quickness. I'm trying to do this whole garden thing without fertilizer. We'll see how far I get. Any advice on organic fertilizers or ways to fend of the little critters?

*The little dark spot you see in the pictures is the coffee grind dumping ground. :)

To keep away bugs, try diatomaceous earth. It works for lots of stuff (not just gardening).

Hey, I read a few things in last Sunday's Parade magazine that might help:

1. Eggshells are a good source of calcium, essential for tomatoes; w/out it, they develop brown patches known as blossom-end rot. Crush the shells and sprinkle the bits on the soil.

2. Hot peppers, when made into a spray, can be used to repel harmful insects; the secret ingredient is capsaicin.

3. Milk can be an effective fungicide. One common fungal problem is powdery mildew, which can kill zucchini, squash, melons and others. Mix of milk and water worked just as well as commercial products.
