A Little Demolition, if you will

My husband really isn't afraid to take on a building project, even if he's not skilled in a particular area that's needed to take on the project. When we bought our house, we needed a fence, and a big one at that. He built a beautiful fence around our backyard. Now, he's on to yet another task. I kept telling him that I could see us having a new entrance to our house or to be more specific, a new look to our front porch. I just didn't like the one we had, and I wanted to update it if we could. I thought, "If Hugh could do the labor, this update could be pretty inexpensive." Here's what the porch looked like prior to beginning our own demolition.

Now,...tell me if you can see what I had envisioned: pull up the bushes in front of the porch, cement the little flower bed and where the bushes were planted, rip off the railing, build stairs all the way across the front, wrapping around to the side and get new, thicker-bungalow type columns. We only have two, so those can be bought over time. It would provide such a more open entrance. Can't you just see us sitting out on our porch stairs enjoying the cool, Fall weather? Ahh...I love it! After mentioning this project to Hugh every time we rolled in to our house returning from an excursion into town and after having seriously talked about the logistics, Hugh started to see this project I was proposing,...a little demolition if you will. Home Extreme Makeover here we come! Yippie! So, to my excitement, he's already started the demo. I must say, seeing what one has only seen in one's mind come to fruition right before one's eyes is pretty cool. Here lately, I've been telling Hugh that if the finished product looks terrible, he can blame it ALL on me, since I was the one that talked him into this bit of construction anyways. I'll update the pics as Hugh proceeds further with this project....

P.S. Project #3: He is also going to build another gate in the breeze-way area.

Jeff,
It would thrill Hugh's soul too!(FYI: Doug was Hugh's alias when Jeff (Jojo) and Hugh were living in SE Asia as missionaries.)

Can't wait to see the finished product! Thanks for hitting my blog Hollie. Yes, we have no a/c here in Germany, but it's only really uncomfortable for about 2 months out of the year. It can hit in the upper 80's to 90's in July and August - and doing it pregnant wasn't too much fun. Lots of cold showers and hours in front of the fan. Can't really complain as it's so cold and wet the rest of the time. As for Mexican food...well, Germans don't do spicy food, so any recipes you can send my way would be appreciated. Especially a good salsa one. Tell Hugh da Man that Jeff says Hi! Ps. Love all the Laney photos...she's beautiful.

Looks like you all are planning to stay in that area for awhile - all these updates. Is Hugh planning to take that long in seminary? :) Like I have room to talk. I should have graduated this past December, but now, it might be this December!

Audrea,
Yes and yes. It's going to take us probably 3 more years of seminary since having Laney. Hugh is halfway through the 90 degree program. Before I quit my job, Hugh was taking a full load of classes. Now, he's working harder so he can support us now that I'm not working out of the home.

I'm glad it should take yall 3 more years-that's 3 more years we have together up here!
And, I SO totally see the vision for the front porch and can't wait to see the finished project...remodeling type construction makes me nervous, so I'm so proud of yall! How fun!
