I'm in love with wool!

Wool Diaper Covers: That's all my mind has been on for the past week. I'm in love with wool. When I say wool, I mean cloth diaper covers made from wool. Babies that wear wool are the cutest EVER. These covers are uber-cute. I can't tell you how much fun I'm having cloth diapering! Why in the world are people afraid to cloth diaper. The washing machine does all the work. We had to sell the Bum Genius and buy 100% cotton diapers. The BG's were great and all, but since they were synthetic diapers (microfiber inserts), I learned that synthetics hold onto odors because over time detergents build a residue that is hard to get out. The detergent holds onto the odors. You can strip the diaper by washing in HOT water only over and over and over until you see NO BUBBLES. I think I washed those things a thousand times. After stripping the BG's, I didn't want to use them. Then I read that people who have well water have a hard time with BG's. Well, there ya go. That was the straw that broke the camels back. I decided to sell them on craigslist and they went that day. So now, we are using prefolds(the old-fashioned kind you're thinking of and fitteds(they look like disposible dipes, but there's no cover attached to them.) I loooove them! 100% cotton dipes wash so easily and don't hold odors. I have to buy covers separately....so when I started to research what kind of cover I wanted, I went the cheapest route with a plain, white cover since afterall, my cute clothes go over these diapers. The Bummis Super Whisper Wrap/Snap is great! I love them and they have a purpose. When I got my shipment in, I only opened 3 and used them, making sure that I was happy before opening up the rest of my stash. During that time, I discovered Wool. Oh....happy day! I can even make my own wool covers from wool sweaters and actually, I did last night. My next goal is to learn how to knit and make uber cute woolies. I can cover Laney's bum with a: soaker(like bloomers), shorties, longies, skirties. Above is an example of a soaker. Here's an example of a longie:
I just lanolize these puppies, dry them by rolling up in a towel and then dry flat for up to 24 hours, put them right on the diaper(they will serve as bloomers, shorts, skirts or pants), put on a shirt that matches and there ya go! I had to get used to the idea that there's no plastic to hold in the moisture. It works ya'll!! I got my first soaker in today and it worked!! Her diaper was soaked, but the wool was not. And it didn't stink at all b/c no urine was absorbed. Just repelled. You can wear soakers under dresses and pants, but you can also go with them as the bottoms to your outfit. Wool is antibacterial in nature and cannot hold odors like cotton and synthetics. The lanolin that I put on them repels the water. Plus, wool is cool in the summer(much cooler than the Bummis Super Whisper Wraps b/c they are not breathable) and warm in the winter. And get this: you only wash your wool covers every 2-3 weeks, unless you get poo-poo on them. And you lanolize them every 1-2 months. And they don't stink!!! Yippie!

I've GOT to share with you some cute pics of babies in woolies. Below are some pictures of Laney in the longie that I made last night for her. It's my very first one. I just jumped right in to see if I could figure it out. It was soo much fun making it! I'm not done with the longie--I still have to put elastic in the waist and sew wool ruffles around her ankles. :)

The other pictures are of the cover I got today in the mail from my purchase off of www.diaperswappers.com. WONDERFUL SITE! I'm addicted to it really. Ha! I can't afford brand new wool outfits including the shirt and possibly leg warmers, but I can afford used ones and I can make my own. Wool doesn't wear out like cotton.

Here are a few pics of other babies in wool:

One of the many things I don't understand about those "woolies" -- is doesn't she get hot and sweat in them?

oh i love the look of wool too, but haven't branched out into it yet...you may have inspired me!! I saw your bGs on Craigslist. :) I'm glad you love those prefolds...did you see that Green Mountain Diapers isn't making rainbow shorts anymore!!!?? I heard that they are going to be making a diaper that is the same length, but a little wider. This sounds perfect b/c Will isn't that big and its already getting a little tough to get a good fit with the snappi.

Alright going to look for some wool! :)

I wish I would have known you were selling your BGs!!!!! That's all that we use, and I would have loved to get my hands on some used ones. Too bad! I love Laney in the wool - very cute!! Where did you get your patterns for making the covers?

Ditto on loving cloth diapers! We're using them too. However , I'm starting to notice the same thing here with our BGs. Were not on well water but the water here is very, very hard! and I found out that this is actually the same thing with well water. I don't want to sell my whole stash but I would love to Craigslist some of them. We've only been using them a ouple of months. How much did you list yours for? and how many? you can email me

Those woolies are sooo precious on Laney and I'm way impressed that you made your own pair!
